In a specialized medical intervention, a dedicated team at Dr. Soliman Fakeeh Hospital - Riyadh successfully saved the life of a 69-year-old elderly patient. The patient arrived at the Emergency Department via ambulance, suffering from acute bilateral pulmonary embolism (affecting both the right and left pulmonary arteries simultaneously), accompanied by severe circulatory collapse, deterioration of heart function, and a critical drop in oxygen levels.
Following an immediate assessment of the case, it was decided to perform an urgent intervention using an advanced technique that combines ultrasonic-assisted catheter-directed thrombolysis with the administration of clot-dissolving medication. This was achieved by inserting a specialized catheter (EKOS) into both the right and left pulmonary arteries through cardiac catheterization.
The procedure was performed under the supervision of a specialized medical team. The technique contributed to dissolving the clots and opening the pulmonary arteries, which restored normal blood flow, led to a significant improvement in oxygen levels, and stabilized the patient's general condition.
By the grace of God, the operation was a success, and the patient was able to recover and return to her normal life within a few days after completing the therapeutic and rehabilitation program at the hospital.
The procedure involved an integrated multidisciplinary medical team, including: the Cardiac Catheterization Department team led by Dr. Mohammed Kurdi, Senior Consultant of Interventional Cardiology; Dr. Khalid Al-Aqla, Head of the Intensive Care Unit; Dr. Ali Al-Wahabi, Head of the Anesthesiology Department; and Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Shuaibi from the Radiology Department, in addition to the nursing staff of the Interventional Cardiology Department.
This success underscores the preparedness of the medical staff and the use of the latest technologies in managing critical cases, contributing to increased survival rates and the improvement of healthcare quality.
